BEFIR is an independent film production and distribution company based in Kurdistan, Iran. Built on social responsibility, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to the people we work with. Our mission is to create a healthy, secure environment for independent filmmaking by connecting filmmakers with international partners who can provide funding and expertise.

We help independent filmmakers bring their visions to life and present their work at international festivals and markets to the highest professional standards. We believe every filmmaker deserves the chance to shine, regardless of background or financial means. Which is why we give special attention to young, female, and student filmmakers, supporting them through financial challenges as they grow in their craft.

Befir Academy

This commitment takes its most tangible form in Befir Academy. Through a growing program of workshops and training courses held in Kurdistan and across Iran, the Academy works to discover raw talent where the industry rarely looks, and to train independent filmmakers with the skills the craft truly demands. But our commitment does not end when a course does. Every filmmaker who passes through the Academy enters a lasting relationship with BEFIR: we stand behind them with financial support, professional mentorship, and festival distribution, helping them move from the classroom to completed films, and from completed films to international screens. In a country where independent filmmaking faces real obstacles, the Academy is both a school and a launchpad.

The Name

The Story Behind BEFiR

Wherever snow falls, a story begins.

"BEFiR" means snow in the Kurdish language. The land of Kurdistan, now divided among four countries: Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, is a mountainous region, blessed with a mild climate and four distinct seasons. In this vast geography, snow is not merely a weather phenomenon; it is woven into the life, memory, and identity of the people of this land.

For the people of Kurdistan, snow is not merely cold; it is a blessing from earth and sky, a harbinger of a verdant and bountiful spring. Despite all the hardships it carries, it has always been received as a gift. That is why "BEFiR" resides in the soul of every story, in the thread of every song, and in the heart of every generation, from today's memories to the thousand-year-old roots of yesterday.

Snow can be seen in the petroglyphs carved into stone thousands of years ago by Kurds; on the canvases of painters, in the photographs of photographers, and in the frames of films born from the heart of narrative. There, snow is not simply an element of aesthetics, nor merely a symbol of cold or hardship; it stands alongside the characters, seeps into their lives, and becomes entwined with their destiny. From the frames of Yılmaz Güney, the Kurdish filmmaker, to the works of Bahman Ghobadi and younger filmmakers, snow has always been present and spoken.

We chose the name "BEFiR" because it simultaneously symbolizes the art of Kurdistan, evokes love and beautiful memories, represents mountainous Kurdistan, and is infused with thousands of years of art from this land.

Logo

Our logo is not merely snow; it is feeling, it is mood, it is light, and it is cinema.

Instead of a symbol, we chose an image: snowfall beneath the warm tungsten glow of a streetlight, an image that can revive the beautiful memory of the first snowfall in anyone's mind. But at BEFiR Production, we do not look only to the past. This is a home for diverse narratives, from folklore to action, from drama to a universally resonant social story. The streetlight simultaneously embodies nostalgia and modernity; and light is the inseparable soul of image in cinema.

Yet we did not stop there; we transformed the streetlight's head into a director's megaphone, a nostalgic accessory of cinema, to present, in a beautiful visual interplay, all that we hold in our minds. Much like every word of a screenplay and the efforts of an entire crew that, in the end, create a beautiful work of art.
