BEFIR is a fully independent film production and distribution company based in Kurdistan, Iran.

We operate without affiliation to, or funding from, any governmental, institutional, or corporate body. This complete autonomy is the cornerstone of our identity. It guarantees absolute artistic freedom and enables us to serve one cause alone: cinema itself.

Founded on social responsibility, artistic integrity, and professional excellence, BEFIR exists to protect independent voices and to create the conditions in which filmmakers can depict their own worlds free from external influence or imposed agenda.

BEFIR Production is the creative heart of the company, devoted to the development and production of independent films of distinction across all genres from intimate auteur works to ambitious productions of larger scale.

Working in close creative partnership with accomplished professional filmmakers, we empower each director to realize a distinct cinematic world to the highest international standards. Our films have been recognized for their originality, depth, and uncompromising quality.

We believe cinema flourishes through diversity. Alongside the vitality of mainstream and entertainment cinema, auteur-driven filmmaking plays an essential role in ensuring the artistic sustainability, cultural richness, and continued evolution of the medium. It is within this spirit of complementarity that we create crafting works that unite artistic integrity with genuine audience engagement and strong market potential.

Autonomous in judgment and international in reach, the department connects artists with audiences, festivals, distributors, and financiers, broadening appreciation for independent cinema and opening our slate to worldwide collaboration.

Befir Academy

The most enduring embodiment of our mission is Befir Academy.

The Academy rests on two complementary pillars: Befir Talent Academy, devoted to discovering exceptional raw talent in places the industry seldom observes, and Befir Academy's advanced workshops and training programs across Kurdistan and Iran, devoted to transforming passionate amateurs into disciplined independent filmmakers. Special dedication is given to young, women, and student talents.

Our engagement transcends education. Every talent to emerge from the Academy enters a lasting professional alliance with BEFIR, upheld through production support, dedicated mentorship, and curated festival representation, a continuous path from discovery to mastery, and from completed work to the international stage.

The Name

The Story Behind BEFiR

Wherever snow falls, a story begins.

"BEFiR" means snow in the Kurdish language. The land of Kurdistan, blessed with a mild climate and four distinct seasons. In this vast geography, snow is not merely a weather phenomenon; it is woven into the life, memory, and identity of the people of this land.

For the people of Kurdistan, snow is not merely cold; it is a blessing from earth and sky, a harbinger of a verdant and bountiful spring. Despite all the hardships it carries, it has always been received as a gift. That is why "BEFiR" resides in the soul of every story, in the thread of every song, and in the heart of every generation, from today's memories to the thousand-year-old roots of yesterday.

Snow can be seen in the petroglyphs carved into stone thousands of years ago by Kurds; on the canvases of painters, in the photographs of photographers, and in the frames of films born from the heart of narrative. There, snow is not simply an element of aesthetics, nor merely a symbol of cold or hardship; it stands alongside the characters, seeps into their lives, and becomes entwined with their destiny. From the frames of Yılmaz Güney, the Kurdish filmmaker, to the works of Bahman Ghobadi and younger filmmakers, snow has always been present and spoken.

We chose the name "BEFiR" because it simultaneously symbolizes the art of Kurdistan, evokes love and beautiful memories, represents mountainous Kurdistan, and is infused with thousands of years of art from this land.

Logo

Our logo is not merely snow; it is feeling, it is mood, it is light, and it is cinema.

Instead of a symbol, we chose an image: snowfall beneath the warm tungsten glow of a streetlight, an image that can revive the beautiful memory of the first snowfall in anyone's mind. But at BEFiR Production, we do not look only to the past. This is a home for diverse narratives, from folklore to action, from drama to a universally resonant social story. The streetlight simultaneously embodies nostalgia and modernity; and light is the inseparable soul of image in cinema.

Yet we did not stop there; we transformed the streetlight's head into a director's megaphone, a nostalgic accessory of cinema, to present, in a beautiful visual interplay, all that we hold in our minds. Much like every word of a screenplay and the efforts of an entire crew that, in the end, create a beautiful work of art.
